The UK market offers a wide range of saunas including traditional Finnish saunas (electric or wood-fired), infrared saunas, barrel saunas, cabin saunas, and indoor sauna kits. Each type has its own benefits depending on your space, budget, and how you plan to use it.
In most cases, garden saunas fall under permitted development and don’t require planning permission, provided they meet certain size and position criteria. However, listed buildings or properties in conservation areas may have additional restrictions. We always recommend checking with your local council.
Saunas range from around £1,000 for a basic indoor infrared cabin to £15,000+ for a premium bespoke outdoor build. A quality barrel sauna typically costs between £3,000–£6,000, while a fully installed traditional Finnish sauna averages £5,000–£10,000 depending on size and specifications.
Traditional saunas heat the air to 70–100°C using an electric or wood-fired heater, creating the classic sauna experience with optional steam. Infrared saunas use light panels to directly heat your body at lower air temperatures (45–65°C). Both offer health benefits, but the experience and running costs differ.
Pre-built barrel saunas and flat-pack kits can typically be assembled in 1–2 days. Custom-built saunas usually take 1–3 weeks depending on complexity. Delivery lead times vary from immediate stock to 4–8 weeks for made-to-order units. Our builder directory can help you find installers with current availability.
